Radenko Milak: Amsterdam Art Week 2025
Brandt Gallery is thrilled to host the solo exhibition of internationally acclaimed artist Radenko Milak as part of Amsterdam Art Week 2025. Join us for an exclusive exhibition opening, taking place on Thursday, May 22, 2025, from 17:00 to 21:00.
This solo presentation brings together a selection of new watercolor paintings by Radenko Milak. Working mainly in black and white, Milak takes images from historical photographs and media sources and transforms them into carefully painted works on paper. By moving these images from one form to another, he gives them new meaning and encourages us to reflect on how we understand the past in the present.
Milak’s paintings feel both real and dreamlike. They show scenes that are familiar but somehow distant, creating a quiet and mysterious atmosphere. His fascination towards technology let him to develop a continuing series centered around spheres, a universal shape symbolizing boundless connection and unity. He paints individuals gazing at their mirroring image within limitless surfaces, capturing a poignant moment of self-reflection, where human curiosity about technology confronts the deeper question of its impact on identity and existence. Each image seems to hold a moment suspended in time, inviting viewers to pause and look more closely. These works often carry a sense of tension or uncertainty, asking us to consider closely what we are seeing.
Rather than just recording events, Milak’s work captures the feeling around them. He shows us not just what happened, but what it felt like. His scenes explore themes of politics, urban life, and shared experience, offering space for personal interpretation and reflection.
This exhibition invites you to slow down and spend time with each image. Milak’s paintings open up a space where time feels suspended and memory becomes something active and alive. His work reminds us that images are never just pictures of the past. They are also questions about how we see the world today and our own role in it.
