Emmanuel Barcilon: Beneath the Surface

Overview

Rutger Brandt Gallery is thrilled to our first exhibition of 2024, Beneath the Surface a solo show by Emmanuel Barcilon!

Emmanuel Barcilon's paintings are a mesmerizing interplay of color, texture and depth. At first glance, his works may appear deceptively simple—monochromatic planes that entice the eye. However, upon closer inspection, an enchanting array of color and texture emerge from beneath the surface, revealing a world of contrasting tones and translucent layers that draw viewers into the infinite depths of the painting.

Barcilon employs a distinctive technique involving the pouring of pigment mixed with varnish onto horizontally placed wooden panels. Through skillful manipulation, he partially unveils underlying layers while preserving their essence. His process deliberately disturbs and wears away the surface layer of the panel, unveiling concealed complexities and structural networks within the layers of color. Additionally, he incorporates elements such as drawings, collages, and engravings onto the surface, adding a tactile dimension to his work. This results in an overflow of sensory experiences, inviting viewers to almost feel the scratches, burns, and drips of color present in his compositions.

Despite the physical manipulation and the juxtaposition of various textures and pigments, Barcilon's artworks exude a serene balance. This equilibrium evokes a sense of tranquility within the viewer, creating a harmonious visual experience. Ultimately, his art represents the intricate interplay between tactile sensations, visual depth, and the meticulous layering process.
