PAN Amsterdam 2022
PAN Amsterdam is the Netherland's leading fair in art, antiques and design, showcasing works of contemporary art as well as classical antiquity, old masters, photography, antiques, designer furniture and decorative objects. Each object is vetted by independent experts for quality, authenticity and condition before the fair opens, giving buyers the assurance to acquire with confidence.
For the 2022 iteration of PAN, Rutger Brandt Gallery is pleased to present a vibrant exhibition of new works by three dynamic artists: Emmanuel Barcilon, Dirk Hardy and Yigal Ozeri.
Emmanuel Barcilon’s (b. 1967, FR) work consists of layers of pure pigments poured onto the surface, which he then manipulates to make the underlying layers partially visible again. At first glance, the works appear to be just simple monochromatic planes of color, but as one moves closer, an unprecedented depth of different, often contrasting, colors reveals itself through the transparent layers. The works vary greatly in size , but each one has the same effect: you are sucked in, as it were, to the infinite depth of the painting. The transparent layers and contrasting colors at the edges of the panel make many nuances of color and line visible. These bring about a captivating, almost hypnotic effect.
Dirk Hardy (b. 1989, NL) explores the complexity of life in an idiosyncratic and empathic way. In the creation of his constructed photomontages, he draws from a web of personal observations, memories and imagination, and responds to both large and small events in the world. Hardy’s hyper-realistic and narrative working method creates a direct encounter between the viewer and the subject. For each work, Hardy designs, builds and photographs another ‘world’ on a life-size scale in his studio. He then shows the works life-size in a one-to-one scale lightbox with a window frame. Hyperrealism and imagination are fully interwoven in his works and the viewer is witness to a series of contemporary, mesmerizing fairy tales.
Yigal Ozeri (b. 1958, IL) lives and works in New York, where he has developed an eye for the unconventional moments of beauty that city dwellers have long embraced. Ozeri’s unique, refined painting technique brings his subjects to life in all their beauty and vulnerability. For his newest series, Americana, he elaborates on the themes of past and present in American symbolism and explores the concept of the American Dream today. Ozeri has chosen to focus on ‘the diner’ as an American icon; an institution that has its image ingrained into the fabric of American life. Ozeri aesthetically captures the most appealing retro elements with a charming nostalgia of yesteryear.
