Art Rotterdam 2024: Find us at Booth 48

1 - 4 February 2024
Overview

This year at ART Rotterdam, we are presenting new work by three exciting artists: Emmanuel Barcilon, Christian Hellmich & Bastien Pery. Together these artists create a captivating booth of contrasting style with each artist exploring subject matter and technique in various ways.

For Bastien Pery, the artistic journey is deeply personal, drawing inspiration from family photographs and museum artifacts that evoke a profound sense of intrigue. These visual cues resonate with his family history, French identity, or homeland, offering his audience a glimpse into the intimate layers of his narrative. The original photographs are transformed and manipulated using software into black and white, hazy, dreamlike adaptations. They exist as distant mirages, intentionally altering the integrity of the original photographs, much like memories worn by the passage of time. Pery invites viewers to contemplate the fleeting nature of time, the role of images in preserving memory, and notions of identity.

Emmanuel Barcilon's paintings are a mesmerizing interplay of color, texture and depth. At first glance, his works may appear deceptively simple—monochromatic planes that entice the eye. However, upon closer inspection, an enchanting array of color and texture emerge from beneath the surface, revealing a world of contrasting tones and translucent layers that draw viewers into the infinite depths of the painting. Barcilon employs a distinctive technique involving the pouring of pigment mixed with varnish onto horizontally placed wooden panels. Through skillful manipulation, he partially unveils underlying layers while preserving their essence. His process deliberately disturbs and wears away the surface layer of the panel, unveiling concealed complexities and structural networks within the layers of color.

Christian Hellmich's paintings fuse architectural fragments, geometric patterns, and rich ornamentation to create fragmented worlds. His compositions blur the line between reality and abstraction, with recurring motifs like windows and doors symbolizing the merging of internal and external worlds. Using a palette knife for textured effects, he creates artificial yet captivating landscapes devoid of traditional rules of perspective. Through this approach, Hellmich showcases painting's power to visually explore the constructed nature of our reality.

We are also displaying a sculpture by Erik Buijs outside. Buijs sculpts animated figures from clay or wax, deliberately leaving traces of the sculpting process. Through the intriguing blend of his figures whimsical and childlike appearance combined with somber undertones, his sculptures embody a peculiar yet powerful presence.
