The exhibition is the result of iconographic research undertaken by Milak in Rome during his residency at Fondazione D’ARC last spring. It explores a symbolic universe imbued with pop sensibilities and iconic imagery, drawing on the history of cinema, mass communication and music, while weaving together imaginative evocations of the vernacular imagery found in mass-produced prints and Roman souvenirs.
Milak’s artistic practice finds its most distinctive expression in painting, particularly in black-and-white watercolour: a visual language that frees the subject from its documentary status, placing it within a suspended, more universal temporality.
Alongside his paintings, Milak presents, for the first time, a large-scale intervention entitled Umbra ante Memoriam. The work uses the Foundation’s monumental glass window as a paradigm for a metalanguage in which the window itself becomes, tautologically, a privileged filter for vision and anti-vision.
