Overview

Rutger Brandt Gallery is excited to participate in PAN Amsterdam 2023!

PAN Amsterdam is the Netherland's leading fair in art, antiques and design, showcasing works of contemporary art as well as classical antiquity, old masters, photography, antiques, designer furniture and decorative objects. Each object is vetted by independent experts for quality, authenticity and condition before the fair opens, giving buyers the assurance to acquire with confidence.

For the 2023 iteration of PAN, Rutger Brandt Gallery is pleased to present a colorful exhibition of new works by three highly skilled artists: Ryan Crotty, Omar Rodríguez-Graham, Myles Bennett, Bastien Pery & Christian Hellmich

Ryan Crotty's (b. Auburn, NE, 1977)   paintings are characterized by canvases filled with expansive fields of vibrant, coalescing colors. His works are devoid of representational imagery, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the pure experience of color. Crotty’smastery of color and his understanding of its emotive power are central to his work.

Omar Rodriguez-Graham's (b. Mexico City, 1978) multi-coloured panels balance between the recognizable and the abstract. His sculptural compositions are an ode to the grand historical arc of painting. His starting point is to find recognizable images from historic Renaissance and Baroque paintings as an armature to place marks. He slowly transforms them into loosely recognizable figures which evoke memories to suggest new realities. His explosively colorful compositions are full of energy and optimism. His resulting works are sculptures that present a purely playful painterly experience.

Myles Bennett (b.Nashville, 1983) is interested in the intersection of architectural drawings, 18th century landscape paintings, and the organized space of woven and raw canvas. For centuries, canvas in all of its forms has represented what we understand to be a picture plane. The material has been stretched, primed, and conditioned for the creation of a multitude of genres of paintings. It has been left bare, painted all white or black, or gridded with graphite. Bennett's work examines these methods, and rather than subverting them, opens up a new conversation about what a picture plane could be.

Bastien Pery (b. Biarritz, 1993) Between intimate memories and vague reminiscences, Bastien Pery explores fragments of life through black and white oil paintings. His process involves a graphical representation, a pictorial reinterpretation of vivid emotions from the past, sometimes fleeting. Bastien uses family photographs, always imbued with a certain nostalgia. Subsequently, he adds filters, enhances color saturation, and plays with the brightness of light, and the depth of shadows.

Christian Hellmich (b. Düsseldorf, 1977) The work of Christian Hellmich can be seen as a remarkable and gloomy revival of modernist representational painting. His works are characterised by abstract curves and the asymmetrical arrangement of color blocks, which are used to develop a kind of geometric grid pattern. The fragments he chooses derive from a large personal archive of photographs, magazine clippings, internet sources and postcards.
