RBG x Blueknowledge Art Collection

6 October - 17 November 2023
Overview

We are delighted to announce a collaborative exhibition with Blueknowledge Art Collection. In their beautiful space in Amsterdam-Oost, we will be exhibiting works by Steffen Kern alongside Christian Achenbach.

This exhibition brings together two German artists who create thought-provoking and dynamic works. Steffen Kern's dreamlike drawings balance between the familiar and the mysterious, compared to Christian Achenbach's fantastical painted landscapes and abstract glass sculptures which depict a pure fantasy world. Despite their differing styles, both Kern and Achenbach delve into their subconscious to craft imaginative pieces, resulting in strikingly unique outcomes.

Steffen Kern works with pencil and charcoal on paper in a meticulous method that elevates a conventional medium to a contemporary style. He is highly influenced by the principles of photography, and he applies various photographic aesthetics to his works, but the subjects of his drawings are constructed without using photographic or real-life references. Instead, the artist searches for images in his mind that appear to be part of our collective pictorial memory. The images are familiar and yet vaguely uncanny, falling somewhere between film stills and a universal subconscious archive.

Christian Achenbach similarly relies on his imagination. He paints vivid landscapes inspired by musical compositions, infusing his works with dynamic clashes of colors and shapes that mirror shifts in tonality. His sculptures and paintings explore color theory through bold color contrasts and disruptive forms, giving them an otherworldly quality that seems to defy gravity and invites viewers to witness a graceful dance of shape and color.
