Biography

The work of Christian Hellmich (b. 1977) can be seen as a remarkable and gloomy revival of modernist representational painting. His works are characterised by abstract curves and the asymmetrical arrangement of colour blocks, which are used to develop a kind of geometric grid pattern which parses visual spaces. The spaces intertwine and his surfaces appear simultaneously. The fragments he chooses derive from a large personal archive of photographs, magazine clippings, internet sources and postcards.

His work is a critique of the way society deals with images in today's mediatised age. Hellmich refers to architectural structures and cartoon-like forms. Hellmich's paintings evoke a sense of nostalgia and associations without knowing exactly to what memories or pas lifes.

Christian Hellmich lives and works in Berlin.
