IN THE OPEN

Hosu’s paintings and drawings are set in natural surroundings, though for the artist, nature also includes urban leisure facilities like playgrounds, parks or outdoor pools. Some of the figures appearing in the images are recruited by the artist from private family photographs. However, they are not transferred in their entirety to the artworks. They gradually meld into the image spaces, dissolving into abstraction, to form inseparable connections with the media of painting and drawing. The brush strokes that break throughthe barriers of form and the chalk wiping technique that dissolves their form, are ever-present features of the style. All that remains of the original photos are mysterious fragmented bodies.

Sebastian Hosu: ‘At first glance my works make allusions to art history, psychology and politics, but at closer look, they invite the viewer to re-evaluate the image. My work invites into a deeper thinking and evaluation of the usual way of perceiving and interpreting situations, others and ourselves. They open a path to internal-external relation, to doubt, revealing our differences.
Sometimes the absence of a concrete painterly rendering of objects and characters in a space could be seen as an approach and a symbol of the presence of the viewer’s spirit.
. It is a process where the thought appears as a spark and manifests itself. A dialogue is established between the work of art and the viewer, an interaction to which I feel I am called to participate even though I am involved symbolically, as the creator. The empty spaces give me the chance to return and re-shape as often as I feel that a thought can become stronger and truer. These “returns” take place and are based upon an evolution that occurs due to the experiences of life; my thoughts are in permanent transformation. Everything happens naturally and by surrendering to the rhythm of nature, we endeavor a broader vision and a complexity of feeling and thinking.
